Choose your measurement method.

There's no single right way to measure. Start with what's accessible. If your self-check suggests a discrepancy, confirm it clinically before building your lift stack. *These self-checks are educational tools, not a diagnosis. They can help you decide whether further evaluation makes sense — they can't confirm you have a leg length discrepancy or tell you how to treat one. Only a physician, physical therapist, or podiatrist can do that, typically through a physical exam or imaging.

At-Home Self-Checks

Three options to get a quick estimate of whether you have an LLD and how much.

What you need: a soft tape measure and a friend.

  1. Lie flat on your back, legs straight and relaxed.
  2. Find the bony point at the front of each hip (ASIS) and measure straight down to the inside ankle bone (medial malleolus).
  3. Compare both sides. The difference in millimetres is your anatomical LLD.

Recommended if you only do one test — harder to mess up than a visual check and gives you the closest result.

What you need: a flat hard floor and a stack of flat objects. Can be done solo.

  1. Stand barefoot, back against a wall, feet flat and weight even.
  2. Slide a flat object under the heel of the shorter leg.
  3. Keep adding until your hips look level in a mirror or to a friend watching from behind.
  4. The total thickness is your functional correction height — a helpful reference point when choosing your HexLift stack.

What you need: a flat floor and a friend.

  1. Lie on your back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor, heels close to your glutes.
  2. Have your friend look at your knees from directly side-on.
  3. If one knee sits noticeably higher, that indicates a visible discrepancy and can suggest where the difference originates — thigh or lower leg.

Slower pathway

GP or Physio Referral

Your doctor may check the same landmarks by hand, or order a standing AP pelvis X-ray or CT scanogram for an exact measurement.

If your doctor treats a difference under 20mm as clinically insignificant, it's worth knowing that a growing body of research points to biomechanical compensation beginning around 5mm — a good thing to raise together, not a reason to skip their evaluation.
